How to Renew Your Registration
Vehicle owners are required to renew their vehicle registration periodically. Many states require you to renew your vehicle registration annually.
The month you need to renew your vehicle registration will vary. In some states, it's determined by the first letter of your last name, in others it's based on your date of birth.
Depending on where you live, you may be required to get a vehicle inspection and/or have an emissions test performed before you're able to renew your registration.
Check with your local DMV to see if you're able to complete your vehicle registration renewal online.
This makes the process much faster and easier! When you complete this process online, your updated vehicle registration will be mailed to you directly.
In some states, you'll be able to renew your vehicle registration over the phone.
In most cases, you'll be able to renew your vehicle registration in person at your local DMV branch. Make an appointment if you can to lower your waiting time at the DMV.
Whether you renew your vehicle registration online, over the phone, or in person, you'll need to present certain documentation or provide some important information. This may include:
- The renewal notice you received in the mail
- Proof your vehicle passed an inspection, smog test, or emissions test
- Proof of auto insurance
- Your license plate number
- Your vehicle identification number (VIN)
- Your driver's license or photo ID
- Proof of residence
- Your vehicle's odometer reading
- Your vehicle title
- The last four digits of your Social Security number
What you'll need to renew your vehicle registration will depend on where you live, so be sure to check with your local DMV. There's typically a fee associated with renewing your vehicle registration.
